Ensuring equality and working with communities
Addressing inequality in Lambeth
Councils
Lambeth Council
Since launching its own Equalities Commission to identify and recommend ways to address inequalities, Lambeth Council has been working to tackle inequality in the borough. For example, The Lambeth School Partnership launched the ‘Raising the Game’ initiative to help schools create the conditions for black Caribbean pupils to achieve and thrive. Already a London Living Wage employer, the council became a Friendly Funder, meaning that it supports charities and community groups to pay the Living Wage through its grant-making. To improve equality in its own work force, Lambeth Council has launched an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion strategy, which has already involved rolling out unconscious bias training to hiring managers and setting up BAME, Women, Disabled and LGBTQ+ staff forums.
