Shadon House is a Gateshead Council short stay dementia resource centre that has an ‘outstanding‘ rating by the Care Quality Commission, has won the best care home in Gateshead award in each of the last four years and is the source of the now global phenomenon, ‘Hen Therapy’ which has heavily influenced dementia care provision for the ‘hensioners’ of Shadon House, and has been adopted across the world within Frankfurt and Michigan Universities and across care settings in North and South America. The Care Quality Commission showcased Shadon House in 2017 CQC’s ‘Equally Outstanding’ publication – a equality and human rights good practice resource which serves to symbolise to all providers how a focus on equality and human rights can improve the quality of care in such times of austerity.
