Persistent and unchallenged drug dealing and drug use has become increasingly open in parts of Oxford, both as a result of the growth of county Lines and local drugs activity. In response to residents’ concerns, Oxford City Council has joined forces and pooled resources with Thames Valley Police to create a new Oxford Public Spaces Drugs Taskforce. In the first partnership of its kind in the South, the seven-person Drugs Taskforce has two police officers, two police community support officers funded by Oxford City Council itself, and two problem solving officers who innovate solutions to our public spaces to discourage dealing and using, all led by a sergeant. Launched in October 2018, the taskforce has so far called back 101 residents and analyzed 606 pieces of reported intelligence, resulting in 23 searches, 10 arrests, and a drugs slavery case that has placed a victim in a safe house.

The LGA Labour Group exists to fight the corner for Labour councillors at a national level, both within
the cross-party Local Government Association and with the Labour Party at Westminster. The Group provide a strong voice for Labour councillors and act as a platform for ideas and innovation for all those committed to an effective localist element to Labour politics and policies.
