Improving transport for disabled and additional needs people
The Learning Disability community advised that they felt unsafe and most at risk of hate and mate crime when on public transport. In response to this Gateshead Council commissioned the production of a short film highlighting this issue. The victim was played by a self-advocate from Gateshead People, a group run by and for people with Learning Disabilities in partnership with Go North East, Gateshead Council’s Community Safety Team and Tiny Hound Media. In addition, a partnership with 5 Local Authorities in Tyne and Wear Nexus developed a ‘Bridge Card’ to allow passengers who require additional help or have hidden disabilities to discreetly alert the driver.
