Delivering high-quality social care
Increasing access to sport for the elderly and adults with special needs
Councils
Waltham Forest Council
Waltham Forest Council has delivered a ‘Sport for Confidence’ scheme to deliver a comprehensive programme for older residents and adults with special needs. The programme has grown rapidly seeing residents attend weekly sporting sessions and regular group occupational therapy, offering tennis, swimming, Boccia and dance. The health and social benefits to the attendees exceeded expectations and has led to a reduction in the use of medication, an increase in activity and increased mobility. Residents have participated in 1,300 sessions since the programme began in October 2017, helping to break down barriers to accessing sport that are often faced by these groups.
