Ensuring equality and working with communities
Promoting gender equality and women’s rights with a Women and Girls Champion

Councils
Islington Council

Islington Council has appointed its first Women and Girls Champion to be an advocate for the rights of women and girls in Islington. The creation of the Women and Girls Champion was inspired by a Plan International report which recommended Girls Champions be appointed at local level to support girls in tackling injustices facing them in the UK. The Women and Girls Champion’s priorities are promoting self-esteem, tackling period poverty, combatting eating disorders, and ensuring every woman and girl can lead healthy, happy and independent lives. The Champion has also been working with Islington4Women, a partnership of the council and voluntary sector organisations who are working together to work to celebrate, champion and understand what can make Islington women’s lives better. We have also been developing a suit of supportive working policies for our female staff, on issues such as breastfeeding, menopause and Domestic violence.
