Keeping arts and culture at the heart of our communities
Repurposing vacant space to support arts groups
Councils
Gateshead Council
Gateshead Council has worked creatively in the use of vacant space at Gateshead Central Library. Following the sale of other council premises for redevelopment, a number of local arts organisations needed new bases. GEM Arts and GIFT (Gateshead International Festival of Theatre) have been accommodated in Gateshead Central Library. This has not only assisted in sustaining these valuable local cultural organisations but the lease agreements in place ensure that they will contribute to the programming of the Caedmon Hall within the library. This approach is reducing library operating costs, bringing new audiences to the library and providing opportunity for partnership working.
