Councils
Wakefield Council, South Tyneside Council

Wakefield Council set up a child weight management programme, putting emphasis on prevention work. This had £2.5 million of funding from public health funding, and also other grants. The programme has seen a rise of over a fifth of participants saying that they are moderately active, and those who say they are eating healthily has risen by over half.
All 20,000 pupils in South Tyneside Council attend schools which promote health and wellbeing to support the “Best Start in Life” model. Initiatives introduced under scheme include the provision of healthy breakfast clubs, counselling and mindfulness sessions, and the Daily Mile where children and staff are invited to run or walk one mile per day. As a result of the successful engagement with the programme, this has now been extended to Early Years settings.
