Tackling homelessness in Southwark

Councils
Southwark Council

To help tackle homelessness, Southwark Council successfully implemented the Homelessness Reduction Act in October 2016 and focused on prevention. The council was successful in being a Trailblazer with funding from MHCLG to help pilot new ways of working. As a result homelessness acceptances have reduced by 47% and Southwark have eliminated the use of Bed & Breakfast accommodation. Southwark have also set up a training academy training over 1500 officers across London and the South East in homelessness prevention. 15 new apprenticeships have also been created within the service with several of these being offered to former homeless residents who have used the service.
